Kick: Music Review

Himesh Reshammiya is continuing on with his 2014 Bollywood escapade in Salman Khan's latest film, Kick, after the musical disaster that was Humshakals. Alongside him, are the Meet Bros Anjann still rivaling in the Hate Story 2 success of Pink Lips.  In this 12 track Bollywood music album, we see repeats of several songs. Having multiple versions of songs seems to be the trend in Bollywood as of late. We have also been seeing many actresses and actors stepping up to the plate and singing behind mike, like Shraddha Kapoor in  Ek Villain and Shruti Hassan in D-Day. Salman Khan lends his vocals to the Kick soundtrack. His leading lady, Jacqueline Fernandez, and co-stars Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Randeep Hooda, unfortunately, have not contributed to the vocals of this album. 

The Kick soundtrack opens with duo Mika Singh and Palak Mucchal's Jumme Ki Raat. This is exactly the type of song we would usually see Mika Singh in. Himesh seems to be sticking to these desi folk compositions, like Humshakal's Khol De Dil Ki Khidi, also sung by Mika Singh. However, Reshammiya definitely improves on this song injecting it with more life, and making it sound like a pumped up version on Bodyguard (title track), whistling included. Muchhal's vocals come across as decent, but weak. Sunidhi Chauhan, or a stronger female vocalist would have been the prime selection for this kind of song. The winning instrument is,in fact, the Shennai.  Jumme Ki Raat (Version 2) Remix amps up the drums and base, making the song much more enjoyable than the original.  3/5 & 4/5

Salman Khan and Jacqueline Fernandez, Kick Argument Fight I just came to have a good time and honestly im feeling so attacked, bollywood meme, funnyJumme Ki Raat (Version 2) features Salman Khan and Palak Muchhal as the vocalists. It is exactly the same as the original version of Jumme Ki Raat. Sadly, Salman Khan does not excel above Mika Singh here. He seems a bit pitchy, almost screaming the lyrics and unable to reach the heights that Singh took it to. Jumme Ki Raat (Version 1) Remix also the same as the Mika Singh's remix version, instead featuring Salman Khan. 3/5 & 3.5/5

Salman Khan is able to redeem himself  in Kick with the duet Hangover . The song is surprisingly mellow for the title, Hangover. Shreya Ghoshal and Salman Khan's voices melt into one another in Meet Bros Anjann composition. This Kick song is multidimensional as this starts as a high class track with the violins preceding Khan's voice, and evolves into an R&B style song as they repeat "Hangover". Perhaps, Hangover, was not the best word choice, as it detracts from the quality from the song, but as in Meet Bros Anjann style they do title this Hindi song with a English word. Thankfully, it wasn't anything like Pink Lips, Pinky or Baby Doll. Something in Hindi seems to be the better choice for Kick, but somehow this track doesn't disappoint too much. 3.5/5 

Hangover (Remix) keeps Salman Khan and Shreya Ghoshal, but adds an additional, and arguably unnecessary layer of beat to the song, detracting from the orginial beauty of the song. 3/5

The Hangover is redone in Hangover (MBA Swag). This version is the kind of version you would expect from Hangover combined with Swag. The violins and guitar are stripped from this version and are replaced with EDM fused with Punjabi style Desi Beats. We see the some Hindi rapping from the Meet Bros Anjann additionally. This song does detract from Salman Khan's original, and tends to work on the nerves after some time. 3.5/5

Tu Hi Tu is the second romance song in Kick, featuring rising singer, Mohammad Irfan. Irfan has been up an around the scene, making his territory with Banjaara from Ek Villain. His vocals are just as impressive as his previous songs. Light and airy, he sings this song solo, reaching incredible highs and lows with his voice. This song has a light tone, beginning with piano, and having light guitar and violins later on. Extremely tasteful. 4/5

However, the downside of this song has six versions that I will pay little attention to. So the Tu Hi Tu (Version 1) also by Mohammad Irfan, kicks off with a rap and then a reggae, and R&B beat. No. 2/5

Neeti Mohan also has her own version, Tu Hi Tu (Reprise) and Tu Hi Tu (House Mix). Her reprise version is identical Mohammad Irfan's version and is on par with his vocals. The House Mix takes an EDM reggae twist, that is not at all feasible for this type of romantic song, and uses words like "Grind on Him" and "Shine on Him". 4/5 & 2/5

Salman Khan Superhero Kick Mask Black Bollywood Meme FunnyThe third set of versions of Tu Hi Tu are done by Salman Khan, in Tu Hi Tu 2 (Version 2) and Tu Hi Tu (Version 2) Remix. This song doesn't match to Mohammad Irfan's version, but isn't horrible either. Khan's voice sounds a little raspy here and isn't as smooth as Irfan's original vocals. This fortieth Kick remix the same as Mohan's remix and just as bad. 3/5 & 2/5

Yaar Na Miley featuring Yo Yo Honey Singh and Jasmine, is surprisingly the only song that isn't remixed on the Kick soundtrack. This is supposedly the item number of the soundtrack, with Nargis Fakri as the main dancer, which is pretty much all she is good for at this point in her career. This EDM song is a little bland, and offers nothing we haven't heard before. Lyrically, like all item numbers, the item girl is boasting how great she is. Yo Yo Honey Singh's rap is the only bright part of this soundtrack, however he is only it in for a little bit of time. 3.5/5

In the end, Himesh Reshammiya outdoes himself in the Kick soundtrack. Despite the album being weighed down with multiple remixes, this Hindi soundtrack is able to come out as a winner. The soundtrack will definitely help promote the soundtrack, but according to history a Salman Khan movie can't be a failure during Eid.

Hate Story 2: Music Review

Hate Story 2 is another Bhatt sequel that is trying to stay afloat in Bollywood. As with Murder and Raaz  the Bhatt's achieve at selling their films with superb music and sexuality. What separates the Hate Story series from the other Bhatt movies is that the firstHate Story did not have a good soundtrack and the film did not offer even one well known actor or actress. Starring in this movie is Punjabi/Tamil/Telegu Surveen Chawla and Jay Bhanushali, relatively unknown to Hindi cinema. However, the music of Hate Story 2 has been sending waves across India before its release. Boasting multiple music directors, like the famous Mithoon and Meet Bros Anjjan, Hate Story 2's album stands among the hit Bhatt soundtracks.

Hate Story 2's soundtrack starts of strongly Aaj Phir Tumpe Pyaar Aaya Hai. If you are young enough to remember the 1988 film, Dayavan, starring Madhuri Dixit and Vinod Khan, this song should register with you immediately, as it is a remake. This remake of Laximikant-Pyarelal's song featuring Pankaj Udhas and Anuradha Paduwal has been replaced and refined by Arjit Singh and Samira Koppikar. This Arko Pravo Mukerjee composition refines, slows and increases the sensuality of the original. Overall an improvement over the original, but nevertheless a remake. 4/5

Hate Story 2 - Surveen Chawla, Pain, Bollywood Meme, Burnt NaanThe Aaj Phir Tumpe Pyaar Aaye Hai (Remix) like all remixes has unnecessary techno and English like "if the shoe fits can you be my Cinderella" or "damn shawty that's very depressing". The remix detracts from the overall tone of the song and makes it into something unnecessary. 2.5/5

The next song Pink Lips is definitely the item number of the soundtrack. The club number composed by the Meet Bros Anjjan and sung by Khushboo Grewal definitely separates itself from the item numbers of these days. They have even roped in ex-pornography star Sunny Leone as the featured dancer for this song. Immediately catchy this song should be something memorable both off screen and on screen. Pink Lips the special Meet Bros Anjjan mark on it. 4.5/5

The Pink Lips (Remix) unlike the Aaj Phir Tumpe Remix this remix does take the song to different levels. Since it is an item club number the extra layer of added beats without the involvement of English lyrics puts the remix above the level of the original song. This is the club version of the more tame original. 5/5

Hate Story 2 gives us Kabhi Aayine Pe sung the famous K.K who gave the Bhatt's some of their their early hits, like for Tu Hi Meri Shab Hai. We see composer Rashid Khan put  K.K back in his comfort zone with Kabhi Aaiyne Pe, but this song does nothing to really change the pace of his usual songs. This slow ballad is, of course. beautiful, but so common with K.K that its not very special. 3.5/5


Surveen Chawla Jay Bhanushali Hate Story 2Hate Story 2 is full of remixes. Actually for every song there is a remix. We are given Kabhi Aaiyne Pe (remix).  This remix takes away from the romantic, ballad feel of the song. Nothing special, but a faster more techno version of the original. 3/5

Hai Dil Ye Mera brings in composer, Mithoon's and his new favorite singer Arjit Singh. This is by far the most romantic song in Hate Story 2. We can see this one perfectly blending in with the Ek Villain or Aashiqui 2. This soft, mellow song brings the pain through Singh's voice. Though it is a very pleasant listen, we don't see Mithoon leave his comfort zone either. He is playing safe with piano and Arjit Singh. 4/5

Hai Dil Ye Mera (remix) offers nothing pleasant, like most of Hate Story 2 remixes. This is probably more of the more useless remixes on the album. Unnecessary once again. 3/5

In the end, the Hate Story 2 soundtrack is very enjoyable. Being a collaboration of many accomplished music directors and singers, the songs of Hate Story 2 come across as melodious and varied. This is the standard Bhatt soundtrack and will definitely attract Bhatt fans. Besides the one good remix, the fact that half the soundtrack was remixes is highly unnecessary.

Humshakals: Music Review

Similar revolting soundtracks like Humshakals were once heard from our composer Himesh Reshammiya when he went off the deep end in the mid 2000's. He practically sung every song and starred in many flop films. Although recently he somewhat has had success with his film The Expose, Reshammiya seems to be trying too hard again. At least he is not dominating this whole soundtrack. In Bollywood, excluding Salman Khan Ajay Devgan, or Akshay Kumar films, music for comedies are not held to a standard of any regular soundtrack due to the fact that they are usually ridiculous. With an experienced composer with tons of hits and successes like Reshammiya and mid-grade actors like Saif Ali Khan and Ritesh Deskmukh, the bar for Humshakals is very low.

The Humshakals album begins its continuous up tempo soundtrack with Caller Tune by Neeraj Sridhar and Neeti Mohan. This duet is obviously influenced by Reggaeton songs which attributes for its catchy beat. It is heavy with English phases with forced rhymes like tune and moon and random violins. However, Mohan and Sridhar are perfect for this song. The hook "Caller Tune Baby" simultaneously annoys and snags. This is the kind of a song a listener would love to hate. By far the best song on the album. 4/5

Surprise surprise, there is an item number in Humshakals. With the item number queen, Bipasha Basu starring we hear phrases like Billo Rani in Piya Ke Bazaar Mein. It is not the traditional item song, but it is not unordinary. Palak Muchhal's voice is a little timid for this three woman item number, and Reshammiya's weak voice doesn't add much to it either. A little folksy and not very catchy, this item number will not please the masses. 3/5

Just Look Into My Eyes gives Humshakals a peppy upbeat feel. Ash King and Neeti Mohan are the perfect choice infuse youth into this album. Perhaps the lyrics a little basic, but if you don't pay attention to exactly what they are saying and listen to the electropop beat, it is not too bad. Although verging on a cheesy teen song, this is levels above the other songs on the album, and does not fit in at all in terms of melody. 4/5

Barbaad Raat combines the female vocalists, Shalmali Kholgade and Sanam Puri in this R&B Hip Hop number. Following the trend of the other songs, this one also uses English in pieces. The clapping and trumpets add an interesting twist, but the "Ooo woaao' pieces don't really do much to really hook you fully to the song. 3.5/5

I'm sure everyone was wondering where Himesh Reshammiya's solo song was coming in Humshakals. It is humorously titled Hum Pagal Nahin Hai, and can be taken with dual meaning. Wondering if Reshammiya thinks he's crazy or as shown on silver screen. We see rather interesting rhymes again, such as Obama and DeGama. This song isn't as headache inducing as the ones before it, but is pretty boring and becomes nasal towards the end. 3/5

What would a comedy soundtrack be without Mika Singh? Mika pairs teams up with Palak Muchhal for Khol De Dil Ki Khidi which somehow manages to fuse a Punjabi rhythm with an exasperating country banjo. This song annoys is unforgivable ways that the Caller Tune didn't have. There are so many things going on in this song it is hard to pinpoint what is really happening. This song will, of course, add to the comedy of the movie but it is annoying for the listener to listen for their own enjoyment. 3/5

In the end, Humshakals offers a lively, yet irritating music. This soundtrack somehow manages to exceed expectations, slightly. It is a pretty good effort on Reshammiya's part, although the songs in which his vocals are incorporated in are by far the worst.

Zanjeer: Music Review

The Zanjeer remake's marketability is off to a rough start with the introduction of the Telegu actor Ram Charan, however Priyanka Chopra will absolutely be the the saving grace when it comes to bringing in the audiences. The three music composers have a lot on their hands with the Zanjeer soundtrack, as it will be compared to the original. 

Zanjeer begins with Mumbai Ka Hero featuring Mika Singh and Talia Benson. This Chitrantan Bhatt
composition the typical roguish hero song that Mika Singh is popular for with bits and pieces of rap and speaking verses tossed in the middle. Its reminiscent of "Udd Udd Dabangg".  I'm sure that Talia Benson is responsible for the horrible female rap intrusion in the middle. Here's a lyric from it, "Oh my god is that your gun?!! Can I hold it pleeeease???" This song offers nothing new and certainly nothing listenable. 2/5

The soundtrack continues with the item number Pinky featuring Mamta Sharma and the Meet Bros. This song falls into the Sheila-Munni item number craze. It lacks anything special and almost sounds like a leftover nineties composition. The lyrics are tasteless. [The song picturized on the left] This Meet Bros Anjan Akit composition is a loser. 2/5

Chitrantan Bhatt composes another song in Zanjeer called Lamha Tera Mera. This romantic song by Wajhi Farooki and Palak Muchhal separates itself from the soundtrack with its lighthearted upbeat flavor. These two are a great duo and work so well together to create a special, uplifting song. 5/5

We have another Ankit Bros composition Kochey Pathan Ki Zubaan (Qawaali). It contains all the necessary elements of a qawaali and even features Sukhwinder Singh along with Shabaab Sabri and the Meet Bros. It sounds very similar to Agneepath remake's qawaali number, Shah Ka Rutba. However, it is a mediocre composition that had the potential to be so much more 3/5

Kaatilana is another item number from Zanjeer, but more retro sounding than the traditional Pinky. Shweta Pandit sings her heart out against the disco beats. This song is situtational could definitely danced at a critical part of the movie and compares to Once Upon A Time in Mumbaai's Parda Hai Parda.  2.5/5

The third item number is Shakila Banoo exclusively features Shreya Ghoshal. Composer Anand Raj Anand knows how to bring in a unique flavor while blending old school with new school, and urban with rural. Ghoshal's voice is naughty enough to pull off this number. Shakila Banoo is high in spice, bringing in various instruments like the tabla and harmonium  and really distinguishes itself from the other two item numbers in Zanjeer. 4/5

Thankfully, there is only one remix in Zanjeer that is Kaatilana M.B.A Club Mix. The song is definitely better this time around due to the extra beat that the other version was lacking previously. Who knows what M.B.A stands for here? Hopefully not a degree.3/5

In the end, the Zanjeer soundtrack is mediocre. The plethora of item numbers overwhelms the soundtrack and lowers its quality as a whole.  The composers seem as if they weren't trying to produce anything special and they certainly didn't except for the two outliers below.

Bajatey Raho: Music Review

Starring: Dolly Alhuwalia, Vinay Pathak, Ranvir Shorey, Tusshar Kapoor

For comedy with Vinay Pathak as the main star, we expect mast filled music. Jaidev Kumar, a relatively new music composer to Bollywood has much to prove with this soundtrack, and he achieves it for the most part. He gathers the Punjabi greats, like RDB and Honey Singh for his tracks in an attempt to create a wonderful soundtrack.

Bajatey Raho's soundtrack begins with a fast paced number called Nagin Dance.  This is the first item number of the soundtrack and it's not too bad. Anmol Malik's voice blends sinfully well with the quick tempo. Nagin Dance almost a contemporary tribute of "Main Teri Dushman" from Sridevi's Nagina. This song featured on the British model Scarlett Wilson, popular from Shanghai's Imported Kamariya, and Iranian-Swedish dancer Maryam Zakariya, has not really created a stir in Bollywood. Nevertheless, it is a unique kind of item number. 4/5

Our folksy qawwali-eque song, Khurafati Ankhiyan, sung by Sona Mahapatra has slight retro-seventies undertones with the harmonium. It is quite an interesting composition, but the hook Khurafati Ankhiyan is a bit too cutting for the gentle sounding song. Pretty average, but a good track. 3.5/5

Honey Singh brings in the comedy to Bajatey Raho with Khudi Tu Butter. Our expectations should be high for a song with such an audacious name, but sadly this song doesn't live up to the  hype. This song is Punjabi-electronica synth number. Again, this one is another item number, but its strictly an endless mediocre song. 3/5

So the theme song is Bajatey Raho. From the get go this song is a rap, and that's exactly what you can expect from out Punjabi rappers RDB. Manjeet Ral is also featured in the number. If you have heard any RDB previously, when you hear thing you will know this sounds exactly like their other songs. Further ruining this song is an English rap interlude. 2.5/5

So the remixes and reprises  come in. Our first remade song in Bajatey Raho is, Nagin Dance (Remix). This version just brings in extra beat and dubstep-ish sound in the background. Its a good alternative to the original, and does not upset the composition at all. 4/5

Then comes Khudi Tu Butter (Reprise) by Gajendra Verma. This one sound drastically different from the first song. It has a addictive almost magical, electronic beat which sets it apart from the other tracks on the soundtrack. This version of Khudi Tu Butter is extremely catchy both lyrically and musically when compared with Honey Singh's version. How could you resist the lyrics "Silky, chocolate hai milky"?  A definite winner and probably the best song on the album. 4.5/5

Overall, Bajatey Raho's soundtrack isn't disappointing. The stronger songs compensate for the weaker songs. It's hard to resist a song called Khudi Tu Butter. C'mon and give it a try.

Sexuality in Bollywood: Return of the Vamps

Sexuality always resonated with the vamp in older Bollywood films, rather than the heroine. Since the heroine had limited displays of blatant sexuality, the vamp's purpose was to be the essence of sexuality for the film. However, as females began to posses more sexuality during the 90's and early 2000's, vamps retreated in the back, and there was significant decrease in item numbers. Recently, there has been a reemergence of the vamp in new item numbers and plot lines,when sexual power has been revoked heroine, such as Dabangg and Omkara.

In older Bollywood films, vamps were typically featured briefly  in item numbers where they exposed  quite a bit of their bodies while dancing suggestively to upbeat melodies. These dances were performed classically in the nightclub, like “Piya tu Ab to Aaja” from Caravan [1971], or in a rural setting, like “Mehbooba Mehbooba” from Sholay [1975]. So many popular songs have used the vamp’s sexuality as apparatus to distract to the villains. In Sholay, Helen’s racy dance serves as a diversion to Amjad Khan and his circle of bandits. Khan, a very witty criminal, is momentarily diverted from his path of terror as he watches as scantily dressed Helen dances around a fire before him.

Additionally, the vamp rarely plays a significant role in the film. If her role goes beyond her appearance in a song, she is portrayed as a brash woman of loose moral. Like Helen and Aruna Irani in Caravan, the vamp will often pose as competition for the heroine or create additional obstacles in the film. There is a clear distinction between the heroines and the the vamp. The dominance of the heroine over vamp is seen in several films. In Caravan, Aruna Irani, the vamp, relentlessly pursues the hero, Jeetendra. In many songs, Irani is seen dancing aggressively in skin exposing clothing to seduce Jeetendra. Despite her efforts and excessive skin show, Jeetendra is more interested Asha Parekh, the demure, modestly dressed heroine.
   
Helen, the other dancer in Caravan, falls into another stereotype of the vamp. Helen is having an affair with the Parekh’s husband, and plans to kill her to steal the family fortune. The beginning of “Piya Tu Ab To Aaja”, features Helen dancing in a short red dress desperately pleading for her lover to come to her.  In this particular song, a world of desire is constructed by the suggestive lyrics and male and female panting, paired with Helen’s erotic dancing. Towards the end when Helen’s dress gets caught on a nail, she strips down to a tiny gold sequined top and a mini-skirt with a slit down the side. The closure of the song is especially laden in sexuality when the lights dim and she crouches with a male in a small cage.

In very recent times, the vamp has reemerged to some extent, after somewhat disappearing in the 90's and early 2000's. Trailer after trailer combines with over-sexualized item numbers, featuring ladies’ whose only purpose is to provide pleasure to the male audience. In these movies, if a woman’s character’s existence is extended beyond the number, her role is along the lines as vamps from older cinema.  Songs such as the immensely popular, “Munni Badnaam Hui” from Dabangg [2010], and "Beedi" from Omkara boast women dancing for dozens of drunken men. Parallels can be drawn to these songs and songs from the past dominated by vamps like, “Mehbooba Mehbooba” from Sholay [1975], mentioned earlier.

Malaika Arora Khan "Munni Badnaam Hui"
In Dabangg, Malaika Arora Khan, Munni, performs for the villain and his minions. Similar to a vamp, Khan is seen vigorously shaking her hips and thrusting her chest forward as she mingles among the men. In contrast to Khan, the heroine, Sonakshi Sinha, is minimal in the sensuous thrills she delivers for the male audience. Thus, Sinha is able to attract the hero due to her coy character. Munni’s function in Dabangg is analogous to Helen’s function in Sholay, because they both compensated for the sensuality that the leading ladies did not provide.

It seems as if some Bollywood movies are going backwards. Item songs may have mass appeal, but Bollywood should be able to revert to the fusion of the heroine with the vamp, and have heroines doing the item number instead of a random actress who are inessential to the film itself. With time, Bollywood may be able to find a proper footing in depicting female sexuality.
